Call for Papers
Activity-Based Computing

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: 1 October 2007
Author guidelines: www.computer.org/pervasive/author.htm
Submission address: https://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/cs-ieee
WIP Deadline: See below
Publication date: March 2008

Classical desktop GUIs respond to explicit user actions such as invoking
an application, searching on user-supplied keywords, and printing a
user-selected document. Mobile context-aware systems can seek out
resources (such as printers) and modulate their responses based on
context (such as the names of restaurants in nearby locations). A new
paradigm is emerging wherein, through the use of physical and cyber
sensors, activity-based computing can enable a device to sense its
user's context and appropriately modulate its response (such as
postponing interaction until a more appropriate situation) and in some
cases act proactively based on user activity (such as walking, eating,
or driving).

IEEE Pervasive Computing welcomes submissions on all aspects of
pervasive technologies that address issues related to activity-based
computing, including:

Sensing: reliable recognition of user's current context
Context definition: identification of relevant information
Activity recognition: hardware and software support for reliably
identifying user activities
Learning: personalization of activities based on usage
Collaboration: sharing activities across users
Roaming: support for seamless migration of activities across physical spaces
Adaptation: how computing activities can reconfigure to best use
currently-available resources (computing, network, UI devices).
User centered design for activity-based computing
Tools for activity-based computing
Testing methodology: evaluation of activity based computing systems
Experiences with deploying and evaluating activity based systems
Submissions should be 4,000 to 6,000 words long and should follow the
magazine's guidelines on style and presentation. All submissions will be
peer-reviewed in accordance with normal practice for scientific
publications. Submissions should be received by 1 October 2007 to
receive full consideration.

In addition to full-length submissions, we also invite work-in-progress
submissions of 250 words or less (submit to mgamborg at computer.org).
These will not be peer-reviewed but will be reviewed by the Department
Editor and, if accepted, edited by the staff into a feature for the
issue. The deadline for work-in-progress submissions is 1 February 2008.
