It's plastic, so easy to dremel/reshape, but its only 16degree fov :( I
believe the MyVu's one is much higher than that. Another problem you will
run into if you make the display transparent is your display will no longer
be readable in all lighting conditions, and as it stands right now, if you
weren't using sunglasses to darken your view, the even on a mildly sunny
day, your MyVu wont be outstandingly bright, and make reading small fonts on
it more difficult. Good luck if you decide to go this route though!
As for increasing brightness, there's a bog standard LED on the microdisplay
connector board as you've already seen, but not much of a diffuser. If you
planed on changing the LED, you can also use a diffuser from edmund optics

And if you wanted a high quality beam splitter, you can buy one from there
