SDF-1: 02.19.02

    It's Christmas in February.

Mom came up to visit this weekend and brought our Christmas presents. (Yes, it's a long wait. NJ was a bit far to go.) Amongst the many cool things was a Star Wars Episode 1 DVD.

However, I'd already received one of those, so what did I do? Exchanged it, of course!

And now I'm living in the 80's all over again. I've just watched through the first 12 episodes again of Robotech.

Ah, Robotech. When I was in Jr. High/High School, this was my show. I woke up *really* early to tape it. My *mom* taped it when the time changed and it was on after I left for school. This was during the era of way too many AB switches on the VCR, which meant I had to spend my time hoping I was really taping what I thought I was, instead of, say, the Little Rascals.

And I watched this show like mad. Over and Over and Over. I had Veritech fighter planes and all the action figures. I glued together plastic models and painstakingly painted them. I own an LP of the music -- no, not CD, not tape -- LP. (I own tapes and CDs too, now, of course.) I joined the fan club. I hung posters of Rick Hunter over my bed.

And now, I have the first two DVDs of the show. There are tons more, and I'm desperate to get them. Because I started watching this show, and I'm so glad. It was a little more choppy than I remember, but then, I was younger, too. And some of the dialogue isn't as good as I remember...but on the whole, it stands up well. It's not like Voltron, which makes me cringe every time I see it. Nor like Battle of the Planets, which also makes me cringe. Poor Harmony Gold and Carl Macek put up with so much abuse for mangling Macross, and yet, really, they didn't do a bad *show.* Especially compared to the Americanization of other shows from Japan.

But the true joy is just being able to watch it again. One of my all-time favorite shows.

    Ah, bliss.
